Keeping a Stiff Upper Lip, regardless...

Summer of the Beard

Posted on July 02, 2025 by Captain P. Fawcett

Keep cool, be safe, and wear your whiskers with pride!

Ah, the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Long hours of golden light, croquet on the lawn and that age-old question casually tossed your way at every BBQ:

“I say old sport, doesn’t that beard make you hot in the summer?”

Gentlemen, let us put this ridiculous notion to rest once and for all! A Beard is not your enemy in the heat. Indeed, it is quite the opposite. In fact, your bountiful facial foliage is the unsung hero of summer grooming, providing shade, protection and undeniably debonair style.

Welcome to the Summer of the Beard….

Do Beards keep you cool?

It’s a common misconception that a Beard traps heat like a cricket sweater worn on your face. In reality, a Beard acts like a natural cooling system, retaining sweat and moisture that evaporates gently, cooling your skin, veritable eco air-con for one’s noble chin. Of course, this midsummer magic only happens when your Beard is clean and well cared for.

Looking for a natural SPF?

Those clever scientist bods in the back room confirm it: facial hair can block between 60 to 95% of UV rays, depending on thickness and length (of the hair, not the rays!) So one’s Beard isn’t simply a fashion statement; it’s a fully functional sun shield. None the less, Captain Fawcett advises applying SPF around and under your Beard to give complete protection for patchy spots. The Captain’s old pal, Scott Maggs aka Jimmy Niggles, the founder of Australia’s Beard Season (now Skin Check Champions) will approve!

The Summer gentleman’s routine

Maintaining a fresh Beard during the dog days of summer requires some seasonal TLC:

  • Keep it clean gents: Shampoo 2-3 times weekly with a beard-specific wash to avoid drying your skin. Don’t go overboard! Over zealous washing can strip facial hair of natural oils and that would never do!
  • But regular brushing works, on the other hand, wonders for stimulating and dispersing those natural oils!
  • Hydrate lightly: Use a Captain Fawcett Beard Oil every morning for softness and a subtle, refined scent according to one’s mood.
  • Condition well: At night, a nourishing Beard Butter works wonders on coarse or greying hair. Captain Fawcett’s award-winning ‘Bianco Classico’ is suitable for all hair types, and specially tailored to add deep hydration and lustre to silver and grey hair.
  • Tame stray hairs: A dab of Beard Balm keeps wayward whiskers neat without appearing overly styled. Cut loose chaps, it’s summer!

Barba-cues ’n’ Beards

Summer is delicious, messy and somewhat sticky, what?! Your magnificent mane may take some of the collateral damage at BBQs, picnics and slap up cream teas - don’t mind if I do? Embrace the feasting with relish! Keep a Folding Comb and napkin or voluminous pocket square handy, perchance scented with delectable Eau De Cologne. And remember chaps, as the RHM attests, Moustache Wax is your chum when tucking into ice cream or spare ribs. Keep your tips turned up and perky, well out of the way. Stand firm gentlemen!

Swimming pool blues

Chlorinated pools keep germs at bay but also play merry havoc with natural oils, so always rinse your Beard after swimming and follow with a lovely massaging Beer’d Shampoo and nourishing Balm. Sea water is gentler, but still requires a jolly good rinse and similar care routine.

Must you trim your Beard in summer? It’s a gentleman’s choice!

Fancy a lighter look? Try a neat short beard or groovy beardstache - less heat, still delightfully sophisticated.

Keep your Beard cool, stylish and sensibly protected this summer. It’s not just a look, it’s a veritable lifestyle!
